Broadband Resources

The following is a brief listing of a number of state and national resources dedicated to broadband access. For more information on the TRORC's role in encouraging broadband access, contact Emma Zavez, Planner at ezavez@trorc.org.


Vermont Broadband Resources


www.BroadbandVT.org - Businesses, prospective home buyers, service agencies that require mobile access and others should check here first to learn about plans and activities of mobile and fixed broadband service providers. Additionally, news of broadband adoption programs like those offered by e-Vermont and at libraries and community centers will be available here. BroadbandVT.org seeks to provide a venue for news of progress in deployment and adoption of broadband and Information Communications Technologies (ICTs) that propel Vermont's economy and strengthen communities.

Data on the maps on this site have been provided by the companies that have built and continue to expand and improve broadband services in Vermont. It is also important that Vermonters' report their experiences, so please share this link with the members of your networks, so we can build the most complete picture of the Vermont Connectivity Experience possible.

www.telecomvt.org - The Vermont Telecommunications Authority recently re-designed its website to provide more accessible and frequently updated information for policy-makers, providers and Vermonters. News articles and press releases are easily accessible. Descriptions of federally funded broadband programs and the VTA's activities are also available. RFP's and funding announcements are announced online as well as through standard emailing lists. Steve Shepard, Chairman of the VTA Board shares his experiences and perspectives in his blog.

www.e4vt.org - E-Vermont is helping rural Vermont towns take full advantage of the Internet to advance a wide variety of local needs including economic development, school innovation, job creation, downtown marketing, community engagement, and e-commerce. Use this site to learn about how many Vermont communities are establishing priorities for engaging community members online in relevant dialogues and building stronger economic opportunities through training and resources provided at libraries, schools and through the Vermont State Colleges and the Small Business Development Corp.

Vermont Telecommunications Plan 2011: Broadband - This document was written by the VT Dept. of Public Service and was issued in May 2011. The Plan outlines numerous telecommunications goals, strategies and resources for Vermont, including universal high-speed internet access at home and work for all Vermonters.

Vermont Telecommunications Survey Report - This report was written by the Vermont Department of Public Service and published in April 2010. DPS surveyed 500 Vermont residents and 385 non-residential organizations (including public, private, non-profit, and educational groups) on their telecommunication expectations, behaviors, and needs.

National Broadband Resources


Broadband Toolkit - The Broadband Toolkit was produced by the Commonwealth of Virginia's Office of Telework Promotion & Broadband Assistance. It contains information and guidance for communities that are pursuing last-mile broadband service and applications.

National Broadband Plan - "Connecting America: The National Broadband Plan", was written by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to detail how the U.S. can ensure that every American has affordable broadband access and the ways in which broadband capacity can improve certain sectors of our society (such as public safety, health care delivery, and more).

"Information and Communication Technologies: The Power of Productivity" (How ICT Sectors Are Transforming the Economy While Driving Gains in Energy Productivity)was published in 2008 by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy. This document analyzes the relationship between the development of communication technologies and energy efficiency. Written by John Laitner and Karen Ehrhardt-Martinez. Note that you will have to create a username and password to view publications on this website.

National Broadband Map - The National Broadband Map allows the user to type in a zip code and discover whether broadband access is available in that area, what companies are providing it, and at what speeds. The website also allows users to compare broadband access in Vermont with other parts of the country.
