East Central Vermont: What We Want is an award-winning regional sustainability plan that was the product of a three-year planning process (2012-2015) led by TRORC and funded by a Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant from the Department of U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the Partnership for Sustainable Communities (an interagency partnership consisting of HUD, USDOT and the EPA). The program supported planning efforts that integrated housing, land use, economic and workforce development, transportation, and infrastructure investments in a manner that recognized that economic, social, and environmental challenges are interdependent, and that solutions have to be interdependent as well.

This plan was consistent with the interagency Partnership for Sustainable Communities’ Six Livability Principles. The Partnership was not continued at the federal level after the Obama Administration, but the regional sustainability plan is still very much applicable to the work of TRORC today. The development of this plan also helped forge better cross-regional ties, and it is still affecting the style and format of plans we write today.
