MONTPELIER — The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) has received an additional $16 million in federal highway funding after the state met all of its fiscal year deadlines for federally-funded projects. When states or other federal entities which are funded through the federal highway trust fund do not fully utilize their federal funds in a given year, the Federal Highway Administration makes those funds available to other states that have successfully obligated their allotment of federal dollars.
“It’s a testament to the hard work and diligence of our Transportation delivery team that we are a receiving state in the August redistribution,” said Gov. Peter Shumlin. “This will help us continue to make prudent investments in preserving and improving our transportation system.”
“This is our largest award ever,” said Chris Cole, VTrans Secretary. “With new federal performance standards, it is even more critical that we maintain our roads and bridges to a high standard and these dollars will help us do just that.”
Gov. Shumlin also thanked Sen. Patrick Leahy, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch for their strong commitment to federal transportation funding.
This year, the Federal Highway Administration will redistribute more than $2.8 billion between the 50 states.
