Forest Fragmentation & Parcelization Plan with VNRC @ Compass School

We would like to extend a special invitation to you to help create a coordinated plan for keeping forests and wildlife habitat intact, on November 12 , 2013 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM  at the Compass School on US 5 in Westminster, Vermont

Our staff will be there with the Vermont Natural Resources Council (VNRC) to discuss existing local and regional strategies, brainstorm new ones, and hand out free copies of VNRC’s recent publication: Community Strategies for Vermont’s Forests and Wildlife: A Guide for Local Action.

The Public Service Department is moving forward on the Total Energy Study @ State House (room 11)

The Public Service Department is moving forward in the work on the Total Energy Study. They are on pace to deliver a report to the Legislature in mid-December and to continue our analysis through next spring. They would like to invite you to join them on November 14 from 6:30-8:00 pm for a public meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the public about our progress on the Total Energy Study and to promote feedback to guide our work. The particular focus will be the pros and cons of policy sets the Department has selected for further analysis.

Legislative Breakfast @ Vermont Tech's SHAPE Center

A Legislative Breakfast is being held on Monday, March 10th from 7:30 AM to 9 AM at Vermont Tech’s SHAPE Student Center, sponsored by  Two Rivers-Ottauquechee Regional Commission.  The special guests will be governor Peter Shumlin.

A hot breakfast will be served at 7:30 AM.  At 8 AM, the Governor will have 15 minutes to address the attendees and discuss his agenda.  There will then be time for the audience to ask questions and bring up topics of interest.

If you would like to attend, please reserve a seat by calling the White River Valley Chamber at 728-9027 or emailing Emma Schumann at [email protected] .  All are welcome.  The cost is $12 for Chamber members and $15 for non-members.

Thanks to the collaborative effort ten pilot homes are being built and sited in non-profit owned parks around Vermont as part of a pilot project that grew out of a nine month multi-stakeholder study and report.

Vermont State Rail Plan Public Meeting @ Fox Room Rutland Free Library

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is updating its 2006 Vermont State Rail Plan and expects the plan to be completed by the end of 2014.

An inventory of the state’s existing rail system has been completed and goals and objectives have been drafted. VTrans will seek public review of both topics at public information meetings planned for late March.

Ice Jam/ Spring Flooding Seminar @ 61 Valley View, Suite #2, Mendon

PURPOSE – The purpose of this seminar is to provide local jurisdictions and regional entities information about the conditions that could result in ice jam and Spring flooding in their respective areas and possible proactive measures to mitigate the impact of that flooding.

 

AGENDA

  • Introductions (DEMHS lead) – 5 min
  • National Weather Service – conditions expected (best case/worst case) for both flooding and ice jams – 10 min
  • Agency of Natural Resources – how rivers responds to those conditions, residual stability and debris concerns – 10 min
  • Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory – where does history tell us we can expect bad things to happen with ice jams? Is this year any worse than other years? – 15 min
  • Agency of Transportation – road system impact, detours – 10 min

    • Protective actions – local input (What have you done before? What would you do now?)
