“What Makes Food Good?”

The UVM Food Systems Summit is an annual event drawing scholars, practitioners, and food systems leaders to engage in dialogue on the pressing food systems issues facing our world.

As individuals and communities, our social, environmental, and political values greatly influence our sense of the “good.” In the context of food systems, we may favor certain agricultural production practices, culinary traditions, or labor policies. The 2016 Summit theme is an invitation for us to unpack the assumptions and biases that underpin our perspectives on how the food system should work.

Annual Conservation Celebration

Join Us to Celebrate Conservation, June 14

Our annual conservation celebration and membership meeting will include a variety of hikes and tours featuring our conservation land at Smith Pond and its historical connection to the Shaker community in Enfield. Please come learn about our work, explore some of the special places we have conserved, and join the volunteers and supporters who make our work possible. Events begin at 2:00 p.m. and include dinner, awards and recognition. We welcome you to any and all. Details on our calendar.

Racing Extinction

A showing of the documentary film, Racing Extinction, is followed by a panel discussion led by wildlife ecologist and film team member Dr. Heather Rally. The documentary examines the effect of biodiversity loss, its effect on humanity, and solutions to inspire hope for a more sustainable future. Slow Money Vermont to host 2nd Annual Entrepreneur Showcase in June

Vermont food entrepreneurs to present at Slow Money Vermont Entrepreneur Showcase event. Investors, entrepreneurs, and service providers will network to foster a shared vision for 21st Century Main Street investing to support a viable and sustainable agricultural economy in Vermont and the region. Special guest speaker: Robin Morris, Founder of the Mad River Food Hub.
Warren, VT – Local food entrepreneurs will present their businesses to an audience of investors, service providers, and fellow entrepreneurs on June 15, 2016. Special guest Robin Morris founded the Mad River Food Hub in 2011 and will talk about how they are helping new and emerging food and beverage companies grow in their community. The event will be the second entrepreneur showcase convened by Slow Money Vermont.

The showcase event will provide an opportunity for entrepreneurs to share their stories and network with investors and service providers to help shape the future of the Vermont food economy. The event has a registration fee of $25 and will run from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at Sugarbush Resort in Warren. In addition to entrepreneur presentations, the event will include ample time for networking. Light refreshments featuring local products will be served and a cash bar will be available.

Slow Money Vermont is an emerging network that aims to inform, inspire and connect investors, philanthropists, individuals, and businesses interested in building a sustainable local and regional food system and to catalyze new investment opportunities in the people, businesses and communities that contribute to a sustainable food economy. Slow Money Vermont chair Eric DeLuca says, “Entrepreneur showcases are at the heart of Slow Money’s mission to catalyze the flow of capital to local food systems and bring money back down to earth.” Slow Money Vermont is being incubated by a task force within the Vermont Farm to Plate Network—Vermont’s statewide collaboration to strengthen the food system.

Vermont is a hotbed of local food enterprises and Slow Money Vermont formed to complement the financing options available statewide to food entrepreneurs. Slow Money catalyzes the ability of individual investors to engage directly in their communities. Through events, network development, and outreach Slow Money Vermont seeks to increase the flow of knowledge and capital in support of VT food system enterprises.
